Hence Hayagriva Jayanti is celebrated on this day. Legend says that Lord Hayagriva appeared for the first time on Shravan Purnima. Lord Hayagriva is an incarnation (avatar) of Lord Vishnu who retrieved the four sacred Vedas - Rig Veda, Yajur Veda, Sama Veda and Atharva Veda from demons Madhu and Kaitabha, who had stolen them from Lord Brahma, the creator.
